The Hokulea

Watching the Hokulea come to Hukilau Beach

October 11, 2013

The Hokulea is a famous large canoe that was built in 1975.  It sailed to Tahiti in 1976 using only the stars to guide it, like the old Hawaiian sailors did.  It is now getting ready for a trip around the world that should last 4 years.  It is visiting Hawaiian ports before sailing west.
Fatai, the woman who is over the Seamstress Department, encouraged the Missionaries to go and see this famous canoe arrive.  She said it was a once in a lifetime event for us and something we should not miss.

It was pouring down rain as we waited for the canoe to arrive.  We were told it would arrive at 9:00 a.m. but it was after 10:30 a.m. when it arrived.  We sat in the rain for a long time and I was soaked from the waist down.  My umbrella kept the top half of me pretty dry.

Sister Wang and Sister Nance trying to keep dry.

Sister Hubbard and Sister Woods are in front, me, Sister Wang and Sister Nance are sitting behind.
(When I first published this I made a mistake and it said,
"Me, Sister Wang and Sister Nance are sinning behind.")
When I told Sister Wang about my goof she said I should include the goof because it is so funny.

Kids played in the water, rain or shine, some played on the sand.  These boys are getting ready for a "snowball fight" Hawaiian style.

People are waiting in the water and on the beach.  Through the rain storm and in the hot sun.

At last it arrived with the two smaller escort boats.

This is the Hokulea.

This picture shows the kids on their boogie boards watching the Hokulea arrive.

The crew were brought ashore in this little boat.

After they dropped off one load of people they went back for more.

This is the greeting committee.  They blew big Conch Shells that made loud "horn sounds" to welcome the boat and the crew.

The crew were given leis and hugs and kisses on the cheek in welcome.

More leis and hula dancers.

This was a formal greeting and welcome.

This is what we were hoping to see.  It is so much more impressive with the sails up.

Nona's "Graduation"

Nona's "Graduation" (Retirement) Party

October 4th

Me, Nona and Tessie.  Tessie made a lei for Nona out of a measuring tape, spools of thread, buttons and a small pair of scissors.  She is wearing it and gave it to Nona after our dance number.  Nona often started to leave work with a measuring tape around her neck.

The next pictures are from our dance where we all stood up and started dancing our routine together to surprise Nona.

After our dance we each gave Nona a lei and a hug.

Here is Nona with all the leis that everyone gave her on.

Logo is helping her take off some of the leis so she can come up and speak to us.

Everyone loves Nona, we will miss her at the Seamstress department.

"Do You Have a Pet Gecko Yet?"

"Do You Have a Pet Gecko Yet?" Cody

I found a cute card in my suitcase from my 6 year old Grandson Cody that had this question on it.  This is for you Cody!

This is my pet gecko.   I found him in the shower last night.  He is less than 2 inches long from head to tip of tail.  He is just a baby.  I guess he thought that if he didn't move I would not see him so he just stayed there.  What to do?  Geckos are supposed to be good luck and they eat bugs.  I couldn't kill him so I named him "Slimy" and took my shower anyway.  I never showered with a Gecko before!  Hope I never do again.

Random Photos

Random Photos

October 2, 2013

This is where I live, 55-652 Wahinepee St.  My window is the second one from the front on the left side upstairs.

Tracy sent me these 8X10 pictures for my wall.  I love my photo wall.

I walk by the Temple each morning and again walking home for lunch.  I drive by it several times a day also.  I never get tired of looking at this beautiful Temple.  It is only three of blocks away from my apartment.

The yellow Hibiscus is the State flower of Hawaii.  This is one block of yellow Hibiscus, If I turned around and took a picture you would see another block that looks like this with yellow Hibiscus.  And then across the road is the beach.

There are Plumaria trees like these all around.  You never have to pick the blossoms, you can always find beautiful blossoms on the ground.  I have seen white, yellow, and pink blossoms

I think that this tree is beautiful.

These hanging blossoms are very interesting and beautiful.

These red blossom are very interesting looking.

I believe they are called Octopus blossoms.  For obvious reasons.

This is what greeted me one morning at 6:00 a.m.  I bet it was a spectacular sunrise over the ocean.  Someday I am going to get up even earlier than my usual 6:00 a.m. and go to the beach to watch the sunrise.  The Hukilau Beach is only 2 blocks away from my apartment.

Here is a hint of a pretty sunset from the Temple steps.

These are Taro leaves.  I even tried these cooked with coconut milk.  Not my favorite vegetable, but not bad.  I also ate cooked Taro (the root like potato, not the leaves).  But my favorite way to eat Taro is in the Purple Taro Rolls that they serve at Prime Dining at the PCC.

This chalkboard is in the old School house at the PCC.  You can learn Hawaiian words with this.

These are some of the projects I have been working on in the Theater Wardrobe department.

I saw this girl getting ready for the Canoe show.  She was wearing one of the outfits like the ones that I worked on.

This machine is over 40 years old.  I named it "Old Reliable."  I sew on it in Theater often.

I love to see all the flags from countries around the world flying at BYUH each day.  I love the sound they all make flapping in the wind as I walk by.

There are some pretty big and colorful fish at the Mall in Honolulu.

These are my make-shift curtains.  They used to be a Muumuu that I had buyers remorse about buying almost immediately.  I like them much better as a curtain.  Below they are in privacy mode.  When I use them like this I can still get the breeze and have privacy.

That is all of the random pictures for now.
